Extreme Edits VS Modern, Clean, & Clear

With the endless editing tools at a photographer’s disposal, there are so many different ways someone can post process your images.

Some trends seem to emerge and it’s easy to get on board with them in the moment. One of the most notable ones of recent years is the flattening of an image’s colours to be very pastel and warm. The photographer very intentionally interjects their edit as a sort of recognizable artistic signature.

Now, just to clarify, every photographer has a specific style that is going to emerge in their photos (that’s the very nature of art!). But what we’re comparing here are the photographers that have a very clear, hit-you-over-the-head way of editing their photos, and the ones that have a much simpler, less noticeable style.

Some of these other photographers choose an approach that, in many ways, keeps editing out of the way. With a no-nonsense mentality, they post process their images to enhance the day and that represent what something actually looked like; not how “an artiste” (said with a French accent) might interpret it to be. In many cases, simple things like boosting vibrancy and contrast can do a lot to bring a photo to life without running the risk of being too unique that it turns away someone’s audience.

In many ways, choosing a photographer that has an obvious colour style can
be appealing because their style seems to be at the cutting edge of what is popular. The danger we often hear about is that these images don’t stand up to the test of time. They become out-of-style when what’s popular changes. On the other hand, the risk of a more straightforward editor is that their photos don’t have enough character to be interesting.

We encourage all couples to look beyond what the industry trends are right now but think of their photos in a decade’s time. Will you still love that photographer’s editing style in the future? If the answer is yes, great: you’re on the right track. If the answer is no, maybe it’s best to keep looking.

Questions to ask yourself:

1. Is a particular photographer’s style going to look good 20 years from now?

2. Does the photo’s edit detract from or enhance what is happening within the photograph?

3. Are the colours and techniques used here what I imagine my dream photos to look like?
