When I built my first photography business, I started under the belief; if you build it, they will come.

Well, I’ve learned that’s not always true. If you build it, they will come. If you tell them to come. 

The more people you can tell to come, the more your business may grow.

What I have learned is that there is an enormous competitive advantage in the market place, if you can say very quickly what it is that you do, in a way that someone interested in you will think to themselves, I need that!

Now building a business is very simple. There is a formula to it.

Here is one equation for you: SO many units of work will produce so many units of a specific result. Maybe the result you want is profit in dollars. Therefore 80 hours of focused work may = $5,000


But, as a human with 24 hours in a day, you can only do so many units of work by yourself.

This is where you may need extra hands or consulting.

As a business, people will call you with inquires. However, consultants and marketing agents will also solicit you with phone calls to sell you their services.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like my focus being broken to hear a sales pitch. But what I learned early in my bootstrapping days when I had no money afford the consulting fees was, let them talk. Ask them questions. Take notes. If you ask the right questions, they will describe the work that they could do for you. Then you have two choices

  1. Pay the fee and have the marketers work for you

  2. Spend at least 30 mins a day everyday learning & implementing the new change

For example, an agent solicited me with a phone call yesterday. He offered me placement in the number 1 spot on google maps for my listing. I kindly told him I was busy and to call me back later.

I did this because I learned what it takes to rank #1 with a combination of paid marketing and organic growth over a 1 - 2 year period, but I did want to hear what he had to say. I have been ranking #1 in special event photography for at-least 6 months and about 20% of my business is currently generated through online marketing.

I then did my own research to see where I ranked organically on Google maps, a different area on Google worth ranking highly. I was delighted to find that I ranked 7th on Google maps for my niche.. without really trying to rank on maps. He called back, I listened and came to the conclusion that I could do about 3 hours of heavy lifting and rank #1 by my own efforts in a matter of weeks or months.

I just thought that would be smarter than paying the agent $197 / a month indefinitely. Let me know what you think in the comment below!
